Police Legal Sciences: Login Guide & Useful Information

Police Legal Sciences Introduction

The goal of Police Legal Sciences is two-fold: 1) to provide access and tools to help strengthen the law enforcement professional’s legal "tool box," and 2) to strengthen the "teeth" in your legal "muscle." This should be done in a dynamic and "live" way, rather than as a traditional comment, footnote or book of police law that languishes on your shelf and within a dusty file drawer. This is a live resource that we all can contribute to. You, the reader, are simply a click away from enhancing our collective understanding and interpretation of the law as applied to you, your brothers and sisters, and your community.
Much of what we know about the limitations of the law enforcement professional’s constitutional authority is because of the hard work and bright minds of attorneys, professors, criminologists, police chiefs, captains, lieutenant’s, sergeants, officers, and assistant district attorneys through out American history . Whether writing the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, forming our laws as a nation, or just enforcing that law on a day-to-day basis, all of these people have studied, taught, and communicated the evolution of the law, the cases, the deference and response of judicial branches to the enforcement of that law by the smallest to the largest entities in human history. The purpose of the Police Legal Sciences is to serve as a vessel for all of these great minds. Thus, its collective strength will be drawn from the authority of the collective, rather than the authority of the individual. That is why, like many of the leading science journals, Police Legal Sciences will rely heavily on reference materials: court decisions, ordinances, statutes, law review articles, scholarly journals, and translated foreign authorities; and it will also rely heavily on references to law enforcement authorities and agencies, police trainers and training materials, and criminal prosecution.

Navigating Police Legal Sciences Login

The page prompts you to enter a username, reasonable enough until you realise that the username is actually your last name, with the first letter a capital. (If your last name has more than one word in it, you have to join them together with a capital letter at the start of each word).
The password screen then appears, and this is when it gets interesting, because none of us were told that the password we would be using would be our birth date. (You should have already been given a list of dates for members of your family to enter into the ‘family members’ page, if you haven’t got this contact the person at HQ responsible for keeping your date of birth details up to date). Enter your date of birth in the format ddmmyyyy, with the day and month being preceded by a zero if they are single digit.
For example, if your date of birth is 20th February 1976, you have to enter 20021976. Here’s where things can start to get a little confusing with the system, because it then asks you to enter your own name and date of birth again, in the same format as above, to prove that you are not a computer robot.
The system is then supposed to ask for a code which is displayed on the screen, and then you should be in.
If successful, go immediately to ‘administrator’ and reset the password under the Staff login section by creating your own password.

Troubleshooting Police Legal Sciences Login Issues

There are a few issues that you may encounter with Police Legal Sciences, and these are all relatively quick fixes. If you have had an issue and used a smaller mail program, which may not have experienced the problem because it was "hidden" or "in the background", this will help you out.

  • Password Reset. Be sure to check your password if you have not changed it for a while; you may have been inactive for more than 30 days, or it may have expired. The best way to fix this is simply to reset your password: go to the login page, and in the upper right corner of the page, you will see the option "Forgot your Password?" Follow the instructions to reset your login credentials and regain access to your account.
  • Browser Compatibility. For best results, use either Internet Explorer or Google Chrome when accessing any component of the site. There are known compatibility issues with several browsers, and you can avoid many of these simply by following this tip. If your pop-up blocker is activated, simply allow pop-ups from this site.
  • Internet Connectivity. In case of website trouble, the first order of business is to check your own connection; you should run a speed test, or ping response test, though most of the time, the problem is on our end. We’ve put together some preliminary tests you can run before requesting support, to improve response times. The result of these tests could be an important element in helping us provide support to you.
  • Security Software. If you are having problems accessing web pages, it could be that your security software is interfering, or installed incorrectly. You can try to disable your security temporarily, and also try another browser, to see if this is the cause of your not being able to access certain sites; particularly ours.

Police Legal Sciences Security Tips

For those of you that desire to have a police account, I believe these are some tips that could be helpful.

  • Use strong passwords. Make sure your password is strong: it should be at least eight characters in length, contain both upper and lower case characters, numbers, and symbols. Additionally, it should not be a word or number associated with you (like the year you were born). For example, "LuckyCharms!23" is more secure than "Bob23". If you have trouble remembering your passwords I recommend using a password manager.
  • Set up 2FA. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a two-step process. Wherever it’s available, always enable this feature. It provides an extra layer of security. Two-step authentication sends a code via email, text message , or app.
  • Phishing Scams. Another way information thieves compromise accounts is through phishing scams. These are another reason why you must be smart about the links you click and the sites you visit. Phishing scams usually come in the form of emails or messages. The goal is to get the recipient to open the message and click on the link. When they do, the scammer gains access to personal information. You can try to avoid phishing scams by looking for broken links. Also, be suspicious of poorly written messages. Most companies and financial institutions use skilled professional writers.
  • Stay Secure. You will be sent an email with your username and the password you selected on sign up. If you do not immediately access Police Legal Sciences within the next 72 hours and complete your profile your account will automatically deactivate and you will have to sign up as a new user.

Making the Most of Police Legal Sciences

There are benefits to enrolling in a course on the Police Legal Sciences portal. First you can track your progress. When you enroll in a course you can check back, to see if you have taken the course, how much of the course you have completed, how many extra credits were available for the course and what makes up the course components. Knowing the course components helps you plan your time for taking the course and maximizes your schedule for professional development. You can also print out a certificate after taking a course to show that you have completed a course. Certificates are printable for all of your previous courses. Each certificate contains the information on the course, as well as the number of credits you earned by taking the course, and when the course began and its completion date. You can print the certificates, keep them as a record of your professional development, and provide them as evidence if your agency ever wanted to check on your professional development credits. Police Legal Sciences has upgraded its site since it became affordable and accessible for everyone. With the improvements made in 2018, you can now watch multiple videos or lessons in a single course, and then take a single quiz, and get a single certificate for all of the course content. This is automatically done when you enroll in the course. You do not have to go to each lesson and individually press the start or finish button. The system will start the lesson for you and keep track of your progress. The same applies to the quiz. When you complete the multiple video or lesson course, you take a single quiz, and the system will automatically keep track of your progress, including if you pass or fail the quiz, if you have completed the course and are eligible for a certificate. If you fail the quiz, it will also open the lock to return to the lesson(s) you need to review before re-taking the quiz. The system will track this for you so you do not have to worry about start and end buttons, or tracking progress. The system will automatically guide you through the course, and help you learn. The site has added some new features as well, including a user tracking and ranking system of sorts. A new option in the account section gives you information on your status. It includes how many total courses you have completed, how many credits you have earned, and how many site-wide credits you have earned. The credits are cumulative for all the courses you have taken. For example, „If you participate in Police Legal Sciences, and earn 10 credits, you will be a "Police Legal Sciences Observer." If you participate in Police Legal Sciences, and earn 10 credits, plus participate in Police Use of Force, and earn an additional 2 credits, you will then be a "Observer". It does not add additional rankings, it is only a way to track your progress and interests on the site.
